Guru Tegh Bahadur - He sacrificed himself for the sake of another faith

My Dear Young and Little Indians,

Guru Tegh Bahadur is the ninth (9th) Sikh Guru.

  • As per the Gregorian Calendar he was born on 1 April 1621 in Amritsar, Punjab, INDIA. However, his birthday is celebrated as per the Bikrami Calendar or Vikram Samvat.
  • Guru Tegh Bahadur was anointed as the Sikh Guru in the Gregorian Year 1664.
  • Guru Tegh Bahadur is known as Hind Di Chadar हिन्द दी चादर meaning the Shield of India. This is a tribute the Guru who sacrificed himself to save the Sanaatan Darma/ Hinduism from being destroyed.
  • Year 1675 - India was ruled by the Mughal Emperor Aurnagzeb. He was intolerant towards religions other than Islam. He was forcing Hindus to convert to Islam.
  • A group of Hindus from Kashmir approached Guru Tegh Bahadur and asked for his help.
  • Guru Tegh Bahadur asked the Kashmiri Hindus to send a message to Aurangzeb that if he succeeds in converting Tegh Bahadur to Islam then all Hindus of India will accept Islam.
  • When Guru Tegh Bahadur met Aurangzeb in his court, the Guru refused to accept Islam.
  • Aurangzeb tortured the Guru. Dear friends of the Guru were also tortured and killed before the eys of the Guru Tegh Bahadur. But the Guru refused to accept Islam.
  • A frustrated Aurangzeb finally ordered the beheading of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
  • In November 1675 Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed himself for the sake of Sanatan Dharma/ Hindus.
  • Cruelty of Aurangzeb did not end here. He did not allow the followers of Guru Tegh Bahadur to cremate the body of the Guru. However, one of his devotees managed to carry his headless body to his own home. Since a public cremation was not possible, the devotee set his house on fire with the body of the Guru inside.
  • Today Gurudrawa Sis Ganj Sahib in Chandini Chowk , Delhi stands at the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed himself.
  • And Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib stands at the place where he was cremated by his devotee.
  • The severed head of Guru Tegh Bahdur was carried by Bhai Jiwan Singh (also known as Jaitha) and given to Guru Tegh Bahadur's son Gobind Rai (who later became the tenth Guru - Guru Gobind Singh)
  • Another gurudwara by the same name- Gurudrawa Sis Ganj Sahib stands in Aanandpur Sahib (Punjab) where Guru Tegh Bahadur's head was cremated.

My Dear Young and Little Indians,

I believe, Never in history has the leader of one faith sacrificed his life for the sake of another faith.

This sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur is the gold standard of Indian values.

Jai Hind !

Gaurav
