Best Wishes on Vijaydashmi Dushhara दश-हरा ( and not Dussehra )

My Dear Young and Little Indians,

आप सभी को दशहरा ( विजय दशमी ) की शुभकामनाएं

I purposefully greeted you in Hindi. The objective was to write/ pronounce the name of our festival correctly.

Its is दश-हरा and not दश-हIरा

In English both these names are written as Dush-hara.

In English people write and pronounce it as Dussehra/ Dussera also.

Let us write and pronounce our names correctly. Indian names have a science, logic and history.

Some of us believe that this festival is called Dush-hara because Ravan had ten heads and he was defeated on this day. But this is a wrong understanding.

दश means TEN...... Today the date/ तिथि  as per Vikram Samvat Panchang is दशमी

Month - आश्विन
Fortnight - शुक्ल
Date/ तिथि - दस or दशमी

And it is हरा not हारा
हारा means Defeated

Shri Ram killed Ravan NOT to defeat him. He killed Ravan because he wanted to relieve Ravan of a curse.

हरा or हरना means to take-away and relieve someone of pain/ curse etc.

What was the curse ?
What is the history of Vijaydashmi दशहरा ?

Please remember that this is NOT mythology. This is NOT myth.
This is OUR HISTORY.

People who do not want to acknowledge and accept the greatness of India call it myth or fiction. They used to call Shri Ram also as a fictitious character.

The place where Lord Vishnu resides in heaven is called Vaikunth वैकुण्ठ. The guards (द्वारपाल) of Vaikunth are two brothers- Jai and Vijai जय और विजय

God Brahma and Goddess Saraswati have four sons known as Rishi brothers or ऋषि- कुमार---

सनक कुमार
सनन्दन कुमार
सनातन कुमार
सनत कुमार.

The four brothers roam around the universe as young children. One day they reached वैकुण्ठ

जय और विजय did not recognize them and did not allow them to enter वैकुण्ठ. The four brothers then cursed जय and विजय to turn them into demons.

They realised their mistake and जय और विजय asked for forgiveness. It was not possible to revoke (nullify) the curse but the four brothers gave जय and विजय two options to reduce the severity of their curse-

Option One

Take birth on the earth as friends of Lord Vishnu (who would be born as an Avtaar विष्णुअवतार). They would have to take SEVEN such births.

Option Two

Take birth on the earth as adversaries (enemies/opponents ) of Lord Vishnu Avtaar. They would have to take THREE such births.

जय and विजय wanted to return to वैकुण्ठ and be with their master Lord Vishnu as early as possible hence they chose to be born as adversaries (enemies) of Lord Vishnu Avtaar. They would have to live only THREE lives on earth.

The two brothers जय and विजय were born on earth as----

हिरण्कश्यप and हिरण्याक्ष during the सत युग

रावण and कुम्भकरण during the त्रेता युग

शिशुपाल and दन्तवक्र during the द्वापर युग

In each of these births, जय and विजय were relieved of their curse by Lord Vishnu as an Avtaar.

Jai and Vijai  were not DEFEATED (हारा) by विष्णुअवतार .
विष्णुअवतार RELIEVED (हर) them of their curse.

Vishnu Avtaar relieved them of the curse so that they may be born again and finally return to Vaikunth

हर जन्म में, भगवान्  विष्णु के अवतार ने जय और विजय के श्राप को हर कर उन्हें मृत्यु लोक (धरती) से मुक्त करा.

That is why the day when विष्णुअवतार Raja Ram relieved Ravan of the curse, Indians celebrate it as Vijay Dashmi विजय दशमी दश-हरा.

This is NOT the only Dushhara दश-हरा that is celebrated by Hindus.

दश-हरा is celebrated on other days also...... but the logic remains the same.... 'Relieving some of a curse/pain' and 'the date is Ten'.

For example..... Ganga Dushhara..... this is celebrated on  the tenth day दशमी of the शुल्क पक्ष of the month of ज्येष्ठ.

This is the day when Maa Ganga descended to the earth and relieved the ancestors of Raja Bhagirath of a curse.

Once again, Best Wishes on Vijaydashmi Dushhara दश-हरा ( and not Dussehra )

Jai Hind!
