World Book and Copyright Day- 23 April

My Dear Young Indians,

Today is World Book and Copyright Day.

What is the significance of this day? Why is this Day observed ?

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) observes 23rd April every year as World Book and Copyright Day to promote the habit of book reading.

These are the words of UNESCO-

"Through reading and the celebration of World Book and Copyright Day, 23 April, we can open ourselves to others despite distance, and we can travel thanks to imagination".

What is the meaning of "Copyright" ?Copyright is the right to copy. This means that the original creator of product is the owner of the product and he or those who are authorised by him can only reproduce the work.

Please notice that  it is spelt as copy right and not copy write.

"Right" means the legal power to do something.

You WRITE a book and you hold copy RIGHT of the book

Who would be the person to hold copyright ?
It would be the one who has written the book/ poem. One who has put in efforts to create that story/ poem. If someone else wants to publish it then they will have to seek permission from copyright owner.

If you want to tell the world that you hold the copyright then you need to get your right legally registered. After this you can display your copyright with a letter 'c'

For instance..See this.....

This is a book written by Agatha Christie
Copyright of the book is held by Agatha Christie Limited
Notice the encircled letter "C"
Copyright was registered in 1935.

Dear Indians,

There are so many positives about reading books ....

It is the best way to relax (instead of watching TV)
It enhances your power to imagine.
It adds to your vocabulary.
It makes your command over language stronger.
Biographies motivate you.
You get to learn about different cultures and history of different lands.

So, please keep reading and if you have not yet started reading, do make a start NOW because India needs leaders who are readers.

Jai Hind !
