First Indian Chief of Indian Navy- Vice Admiral Ram Dass Katari

My Dear Young & Little Indians,

63 years back on this day (22 April 1958) Vice Admiral Ram Dass Katari took over as the first Indian Chief of Indian Navy.

Till this time, Indian Navy was commanded by British Officer Vice Admiral Sir Stephen Hope Carill.

Prior to independence, Indian Armed Forces were commanded by British Officers.Transfer of power to an Indian Chief was done for the Army first because it was the largest of the three wings of the Armed Forces.

15 August 1947
India became independent

15 January 1949
Lt General K M Cariappa took over as the first Indian Chief of Indian Army
(The Chief was then known as Commader-in-Chief).
He later rose to the rank of Field Marshal.

1 April 1954
Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee took over as the first Indian Chief of Indian Air Force.
(The Chief was then known as Commader-in-Chief).

22 April 1958
Vice Admiral Ram Dass Katari took over as the first Indian Chief of Indian Navy.


Vice Admiral Ram Dass Katari led The Indian Navy against the Portuguese at the time of annexation of Goa, Daman and Diu. This Operation was called "Operation Vijay" 


India's first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was acquired during his time.
