International Day of Yog is celebrated on 21st June. Why?
My Dear Young and Little Indians
Thousands and thousands of years back on the bank of lake Kantisarovar कांतिसरोवर in the Himalaya हिमालय came a Yogi योगी. (Lake Kantisarovar is near the Kedarnath Dham in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand)
He sat there and started meditating. People gathered around him and waited to hear him.
The Yogi unaware of the people’s presence continued to meditate. Gradually people started dispersing.
The Yogi continued to meditate for years.
When he opened his eyes he saw seven men sitting and still waiting for him.
This Yogi was Adi-Yogi आदियोगी or Lord Shiv
Adi-Yogi आदियोगी means the first Yogi. He is the source of Yog.
The seven men who were sitting and waiting for Adi-Yogi आदियोगी were the Sapt-Rishi सप्त ऋषि Seven Sages.
The day on which Adi-Yogi आदियोगी opened his eyes, the sun had started moving from the North to the South.
In today’s times of modern geography, this day is known as Summer Solistice (in the northern hemisphere of the earth).
On Summer Solstice, the day is the longest day and night is the shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. From this date onwards the sun starts moving towards the south (in others the revolution of the earth takes the northern hemisphere away from the sun).
On the Gregorian calendar this day is marked as 21st of June- that is today!
This is probably the reason why the Govt of India recommended this date to be declared as The International Day of Yog by the United Nations.
Wish you all a physically healthy, mentally strong, emotionally content and a spiritually Indian life ahead!
Congratulations on The International Day of Yog!
Yog is India’s blessing to this world!
We are proud- We are Indian
Jai Hind!
