Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, Maha Vir Chakra

My Dear Young Indians,

Today is the martyrdom of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, Maha Vir Chakra

He was martyred on 17 Nov 1962 fighting the Chinese in Arunachal Pradesh (then called NEFA).

After Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was dead, the Chinese cut-off his head and took it with them as a 'trophy. After the war was over, impressed by his bravery, the Chinese presented a brass bust of Jaswant Singh to India.

Indian Army maintains a shrine/ memorial “Jaswantgarh” near Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh).

Though Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was martyred, he is believed to be still alive! Locals in Arunachal Pradesh believe that he walks around in the night and his spirit protects the area. The locals call him Baba.

A room that is maintained for him by the Indian Army has a bed that is made up every night (prepared for Baba to sleep.) Patrolling shoes of Baba are also kept in the same room. The room remains closed during the night.

In the morning when the room is opened, the bed sheet is found crumpled (as if someone had slept on it) and his patrolling shoes are found covered with mud (as if someone had worn them and walked on mud)

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat's younger brother Shri Vijay Singh Rawat lives in Dehradun (Uttarakhand).

We met Shri Vijay Singh Rawat and his family at their home.....

This is the picture of the brass bust that was given by the Chinese

Wife of Shri Vijay Singh Rawat told us that during her visit to Jaswantgarh some years back, she was seated on a sofa along with her son and daughter-in-law. The Army soldier who was sitting opposite to them said he could see a fourth figure next to them !!

Was that Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat who wanted to be with his family?

Mr Dear Indians,

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat knew that his end would be death and may be a painful death. But he chose to fight and fight till the end.

He must have died with a satisfaction that he did his best

It does not feel nice to say this, but the fact is that in 1962 we lost the war.
We may have lost the war but our soldiers like Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat were successful because they did their best.

Doing our duty to the best of our abilities and with sincerity is SUCCESS

Jai Hind !

Gaurav Negi
