History of Bhai Dooj भाई दूज or भईया दूज

My Dear Young and Little Indians,

Today is Bhai Dooj भाई दूज  or भईया दूज
You all must have celebrated this festival toady morning.

History of  Bhai Dooj भाई दूज  or भईया दूज

Yam and Yami यम और यमी are the children of Lord Surya सूर्य देव

We know Yam as Yamraj यमराज and यमी as Yamuna यमुना- River Yamuna
Yam and Yami are twins.

Yami or Yamuna invited her brother Yam to her home many times but Yam could never visit his sister.

Then one day Yam made a surprise visit to his sister Yami.

That was the Second Day of the Shukl Paksh of the month of Kartik (कार्तिक मॉस के शुक्ल पक्ष की द्वितीय तिथि)

Yami was so delighted to see her brother. She prepared delicious dishes for her brother. Yam was overwhelmed with his sister’s love and he asked Yami to ask for a boon.

Yami asked her brother to visit her every year.
Yam granted her this wish.

From then on कार्तिक मॉस के शुक्ल पक्ष की द्वितीय तिथि is celebrated as भाई दूज
On this day brothers visit their sisters like Yam visits Yami.

The word दूज as in भाई दूज signifies the तिथि.
We have discussed earlier that Hindu festivals are celebrated as per तिथि of विक्रम संवत year.

दूज means Two or Second.

You would have come across bollywood songs like- तेरे सिवा दूजा न कोई meaning there is no second one :)

भाई दूज is celebrated on second or द्वितीय तिथि of कार्तिक मॉस
This festival is also known as यम द्वितीय

Remember….. it is Yam and not YamA. We should not distort our names and history by mis-spelling and mis-pronouncing.

Some people call this festival as भाई टीका because sisters put a टीका on the forehead of their brothers on this day.

My dear Indians,

Enjoy your festival, eat well, eat a lot and REMEMBER it is our history and culture that makes us special.

INDIA holds a place of pride in this world because of its history and culture.

मेरी संस्कृति , मेरे संस्कार

मेरा भारत , मैं हूँ भारत

Jai Hind !
