Image
My Dear Indians, Many of you would have watched the movies- 1)    The Ghazi Attack 2)    Raazi Haven't you ?   The US Navy had a submarine by the name USS Diablo. They had leased this submarine to Pakistan Navy. The Pakistan Navy renamed it as PNS Ghazi. Hindi film 'The Ghazi Attack' was a commercialized and modified version of what had actually happened. What was the real Ghazi incident? PNS Ghazi was a part of Pakistan Naval fleet in 1971. The war started on the evening of 3 December 1971 when Pakistan launched air attacks of Indian air bases of Ambala, Agra, Avantipur and Srinagar. Before starting the war, Pakistan had made plans to deploy PNS Ghazi against India. The Captain of PNS Ghazi was Commander Zafar Mohammed Khan. He was given the task of destroying and sinking INS Vikrant (Air-craft carrier of the Indian Navy). India had prior intelligence (information) that Pakistan was planning to launch an attack against INS Vikrant. This intelligence was passed on to India

My Dear Young Indians, Nights and early mornings are cold now. However, we have all stay inside our homes with warm clothes on so it does not really matter to us what the outside temperature is. The capital of Delhi is at a height of 250 metres. At a height of 5,500 metres is a place called Rezang La in Laddakh (On the India China border) Temperature at this place in November is minus 15 degrees…. Imagine what would happen to us…if you and I had to sit at Rezang La in the open snow without adequate winter clothes ! On 18 November 1962 (59 years back) a company of Indian soldiers of the 13 Kumaon Regiment were posted at this place to stop the invading Chinese forces. They had inadequate winter clothes and weapons of world war 2 era (Thanks to Prime Minister Nehru) This Company was commanded by Maj. Shaitan Singh. Shaheed Major Shaitan Singh was honoured with the Param Vir Chakra for battle that was fought by him and his men in the morning of 18 November 1962 at Rezang La  (Laddakh) agai

After Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was dead, the Chinese cut-off his head and took it with them as a 'trophy. After the war was over, impressed by his bravery, the Chinese presented a brass bust of Jaswant Singh to India. Indian Army maintains a shrine/ memorial “Jaswantgarh” near Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh). Though Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was martyred, he is believed to be still alive! Locals in Arunachal Pradesh believe that he walks around in the night and his spirit protects the area. The locals call him Baba. 7 November   My Dear Indians, Today is the birthday of Bipin Chandra Pal He was born on 7 Nov 1858. He passed away on 20 May 1932. He was born in a place called Sylhet in Bengal which is now a part of Bangladesh. Bal, Lal and Pal were revolutionaries and freedom fighters but their thoughts were completely different from that of Mahatma Gandhi and Congress party. Sri Aurbindno and Bipin Chandra Pal were the creators of “ Purna Swaraj ” and “Swadeshi” movement. Bipin Chandra Pal was against caste system and was in favour of widow re-marriage. And he practiced what he preached….when his wife passed away he married a widow and joined ‘Brahmo Samaj’.     Who were Bal, Lal and Pal ?   They were Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lal a Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal   One of you asked me, What does it mean - 'there thoughts were different from that of Mahatma Gandhi?'   If I can use the word 'extreme' .... then Gandhi ji was an extreme follower of non-violence. An example is the way he a

National Unity Day - Sardar Patel

Image
31 October My Dear Indians, When India attained independence in 1947, the princely states were asked to join either the dominion of India or the dominion of Pakistan.  Sardar Vallabhhai Patel took upon himself the responsibility to merge 565 princely states into the Union of India. Imagine what a herculean task it was ! Negotiating with 565 states- convincing some, pushing some and forcing some of the sates to join…. Looks impossible but Sardar Patel did it! He united India into a cohesive country. That is why since 2014 India celebrates his birthday as “ National Unity Day or राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of UK had prophesied that Indians will fight among themselves and India will disintegrate. Sardar Patel proved him wrong. The most notable states that joined India by force were Hyderabad and Junagadh and then J&K. We have discussed about J&K and Hyderabad (Operation Polo).  Accession of Jammu and Kashmir with India   Accession of Hyderabad wit

Reaching Srinagar by aircrafts was the only option and Srinagar airport was the only airport in J&K. Pakistan army and militia were already near Baramulla approximately 80 kms from Srinagar. On 27 October 1947 , 1st Battalion of Sikh Regiment (an infantry regiment) commanded by Lt Col. Dewan Ranjit Rai was airlifted to Srinagar. (Airlifted means- transported by aeroplanes) On reaching Srinagar, Lt Col. Dewan Ranjit Rai first secured the Srinagar airport. After this, he along with one company of soldiers moved towards Baramulla to stop the advance of the raiders. During the fight with the raiders, Lt Col De
